ABOUT

We are seniors at Saint Michael's College in Cholchester, Vermont. We major in Digital Media and Communications and for our capstone project we plan to attack the toxic mindset that comes with over competition. Each one of us (Casey, Christina and Alex) has dealt with or experienced this before, leading us to this eventual project and topic idea.

Each one of us has a different skill set surrounded by similar environments. We all work in sports media, Casey and Christina work with the Men's Ice Hockey team and Saint Michael's College. They create graphics, videos and photos for the team's social media pages. While Alex works as a staff photographer at the University of Vermont Athletics Department. He gets put on assignment at different home and away sporting event with the school.

Our mixed skills of production, mixed media, writing, and cinematography compliment one another when creating this project.

Growing up in Stow Massachusetts as a triplet, I was thrown into a hyper competitive environment from the very beginning. Being involved in sports all seasons of the year constantly competing with my friends, teamates, and identical twin brother. My parents kept up with our active sports schedule as well as all of our farm chores. As kids we could be found on the sports fields, golf courses, frozen ponds playing hockey, or mountain biking in the woods. Here at Saint Michael’s College while I am not playing for any of the teams on campus I am actively involved in creating content for the Men’s Ice Hockey team and the Alpine/Nordic Ski teams. Sports and action photography is my main passion in the media world. I am looking to bring high energy and a unique perspective to this project and am keen to explore the different facets surrounding competion, especially when it turns sour.

I was raised in Upstate New York in the competitive world of youth soccer which brought me to Saint Michael’s College as a student athlete on the Women’s Soccer Team. When I’m not competing on the soccer pitch, I film and curate highlight reels for other athletic teams showcasing their competitive natures, mainly in the aggressive and fast paced realm of Men’s Ice Hockey. The topic of toxic competition intrigues and begs my attention as an individual whose life is entirely centered around competing. Further exploring how toxic competition manifests, as well as how it bleeds into other areas of life outside of athletics are areas I am eager to further explore.

I was raised with 2 siblings in a small town outside of Rochester, New York. As the middle child you’d expect there to be some sort of competition for attention between me and my siblings, however, that’s not the case. My journey with competition has always been with myself. With caring and present parents, I always had people believe in me, but I didn’t believe in myself. I would make up narratives and come up with reasons why I wasn’t doing enough, or how I should be doing more. Burnout and exhaustion has taken over my life at many different moments, some turning into physical injuries in sports. My toxic mindset has lead to some pretty low lows, but also has lead to some highs that are difficult to replicate. This is why this mindset is so dangerous, the lows outweigh the highs, but the highs exist.
